Another idea re: slow sales

I was thinking about all the suggestions and inspiration that was offered for the other threads and realized that no one had suggested that this was a perfect time to build our own collections. Personally there are a number of makers here whose work I would like to own and examine and would be more than willing to trade for. I don't think a KITH would work for me but an honest trade knowing what is coming for what is sending. What do you guys think. An interesting way of turning over inventory?
Thanks
Steve

I suppose that's one way of keeping yourself from being your own best collector!

If diversifying your own collection is part of your personal goal, then it's a great idea. If building inventory so that you can act as a purveyor in the future, then it could be a bit risky, banking on the future popularity of makers other than yourself.

I personaly am also a collector as well as a maker. I have thought about asking other to trade knife for knife but never have so this is something I would also be interested in.
Thanks, Shane

That sounds like a interesting way to build up a collection. There are several out there that I would like to have and your knives are on the list.

During a slow period it would be a good idea to add to your own Portfolio.

Painters and sketch artists do this all the time to have a range of work to show prospective clients so as knifemakers it is also a valuable tool.

Several years back I was lucky enough to arrange an art gallery showing of knives for the Canadian Knifemaker Guild and even though the idea was well recieved by the makers getting product to show was difficult. The makers had sold all of their best work and couldn't borrow it back for the show. Since then I have collected a wide range of my new products for my own collection with a view to someday putting on a one man show.
