How can I weld to a piece of damascus?

I was given a nice piece of damascus that is made of 1095 and 15n20 and is only about 5 inches long. I want to weld a piece of 1095 to the end for the handle area but wanted to know if I could just weld it with my mig welder or will this give me problems when it is heat treated?

Thanks
