electro etch potentiometer
I souped up my personalizer so I am getting 24-26 volts. I would like to install a potentiometer to vary the output.
How many ohms and where do I put it. circuit is very similar to Bob Warners. TJ __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker |

I saw a homemade bench power supply that pluged into a household lamp dimmer. It varied the voltage. What voltage and amps is your transformer rated at?

My Transformer is the one Bob Warner recommended for his home made unit. I just replaced my personalizer transformer with that one. It's 25.2 volts at 3 amps.
I read a thread in the forums somewher that recommend a pot but have search high and low can't find it. Just want to be able to vary my voltage. Thanks for your response TJ __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker |

Humm...this is interesting TJ. I re-did my personalizer just like you did, after reading a post of yours on another forum. The only way I can think of offhand to change the voltage, is to use a variac, and plug directly into it, the variac is then plugged into the wall. I use one for the anodizer I built using the Warner anodizer tutorial. These Variac's can be found on Ebay. Obviously you are wanting to lessen the amount of current going through the handpiece for some reason, and using shorter application times isn't working very vell? You can sure fry a stencil if it's left to long!

Thanks Robert
I found a use for a router speed control I have had lying around for years. At full resistance it cut the voltage down to 20. Yeah I was frying stencils in a 3 second strike. I feel that any shorter time and there isn't time for anything to happen. Tried it and it worked pretty good. I am also making stencils so there is a lot of variables to watch out for. The stencils I had made at electro chem work real well so I am ok with the machine now. What voltage do you get with your setup? Thanks for your reply TJ __________________ TJ Smith Knifemaker |

That router speed control looks like a good idea. I looked up "router speed controls" in Google and many sites came up. Prices varied but considering they were rated at 120 volts, 15 amps, had a cord, switch, and were housed in a case, I wouldn't go to the trouble of making one from a Home Depot dimmer and buying the hardware. Most of the hardware store dimmers I'v seen in past years were rated at 600 watt, thats a 5 amp, 120 volt dimmer. If you did find a 10 amp dimmer, it were spendy.
