Half Horse/ Half Alligator Bowie

Here's a reproduction Bowie that I recently finished. I based this one on a Tillotson knife:

I did take the liberty of changing the style of the guard to a more traditional oval shape from Tillotson's signature shape.

The blade is W2. The handle scales are walrus. The pommel is N/S and the escutchion is sterling.

Let me know what you think.

Gary

Gary, you make some really wonderful knives and I really like both those Bowies. especially the "patina" on the first one. And the guard on the second. How did you do that pommel? Is it carved?

I met you at the Arkansas knife show and you gave me info for your Branson Hammer-In. I will see you there as I have taken vacation for that weekend and also the Topeka Heartland. Thanks.

Tony,

Thanks for the kind words. I wasn't very clear I guess with my post as the first knife photo is the original that I based mine on. To answer your question, the pommel is cast from N/S.

Glad that you will be able to join us this fall both in Topeka and Branson. I'm sure that you will enjoy it.

Gary

Lovely! Excellent work sir. One of these days I'd like to make a Woodhead style bowie, and this inspires me to get on it.

Thanks for the kind words. If you are wanting to build a Woodhead style knife then I would recommend that you get a copy of Dr. Batson's book "COFFIN HANDLE BOWIE KNIVES". It will be a big help.

That's nice, Gary. I like that you filtered the historic original through your own hands. It looks good. I have one by John Perry that I like. Both you and John reproduced something that was true for the originals but which has fallen out of favor in modern knives - the smallish handles that were sort of dainty-like. Gentlemen and Posers liked this style, a carryover from England and parts of Europe to the East. To them a big blade was good but a big honkin' handle just made it difficult to carry under their nice coats, when they were carrying out their public affairs.
I understand that there aren't many original casts of originals from which to work, but that someone out there has one and lets other makers use it, or makes casts from it and gives or sells them or something like that. I think John told me that. Here's his take: http://www.fototime.com/6C396CAED744AA7/orig.jpg
Nice one, Gary.

Thanks, Buddy. I think that you nailed it when you said that many were "Gentlemen's Bowies". I hadn't thought about the small handle size in that way but it makes a lot of sense.
