That is not bad at all. With a smaller knife I don't think that the flatter scales are so bad. There's at least enough contour to bring out the pattern in two tone Micarta. The pins may be a little large for the knife and the rear pin looks off center in the photos. Keep the pin holes centered in the tang. Maybe if you try about a 3 mm pin. I'm thinking that maybe you used something around 6-6.5 mm?

Thanks for the reply Doug!
Yep the rear pin is off center. The hole is not straight I need a drill press... Yep 6mm stainless pins. My next knife is a hidden tang, i want to use 3mm brass pins ... Is brazing rod ok to use?? Cheers __________________ R Rogers Knives |

nice Knife. I use brazing rod for pins because I can get 3 feet for 2 bucks and I see no difference in the finished product when it's just used for handle pins.

Thanks for the info, do you hammer your pins or just let the epoxy hold them?

Both. I grind the pins down close, but leave enough there so that when I hit the top of the pin, the bottom is supported on the anvil. Otherwise They can break loose from the epoxy.

To get the snuggest fit that I can I drill the hole in the tang with the same size drill bit then ream it slightly with a carbide burr on my Dremel tool to where the pin just slips in.

Not bad Rick, looks like a handy little blade. The flat-to-convex description is quite obvious in the second pic....well done.
Re-visiting the "scene of the crime" is always helpful in analyzing one's work. Different lighting always helps us spot the should-a-done's. Looking forward to seeing more. On the brazing rod, some of it can be a bit brittle due to alloy content. Be careful about peening it (even if you fire annealed it) as it tends to crack easily. If you take the pins and roll them under slight pressure on hard surface with the edge of a file, you can add micro texture to their surface. This will lock them in place when the epoxy cures. Negates the need for peening. Drill press is indeed a very shop worthy tool to have. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H Last edited by Crex; 01-21-2013 at 05:24 AM. |

I am a newbie. Reading as much as I can as well as watching all types of videos. My son loves knives so I thought maybe this could be our hobby together and hopefully we might be able to build a few knives this spring and summer. I think your knife is awesome! Wonderful job! I hope our first knife turns out half as nice as yours. GREAT JOB...
