I just milled out the top of the tang and cut a spacer to go in it and I used lacewood because it's easer to match the grain in the wood. If you really really look you may think you see a seam.

I was expecting you to say you milled a slot in the wood, drilled holes, dovetailed it perfectly and slid it over the tang. Your method was much easier and faster. You did a great job of matching up the inserted piece.

I immediately thought you added a piece but your fit is so good I could not see the lines and had to start thinking of more difficult methods.

You should do the bottom as well, that will really throw people off.

Good idea and great job making it real.
