Micarta How to?

I have some Kevlar that I'd like to use to make some micarta. Does anyone have a link to someplace online that will tell me how best to do this?

Will do, This is going to be a blast. Maybe I'll have to make myself some new grips for my Ruger MkI also. I'll have to find something fancy.

I just made some "Levi-mascus" (or jeanscarta). After cutting up and old pair of Levi's into 3x7" pieces I bleached half the stack and left the other half un-bleached. They were epoxied together alternating colors on some wax paper. I then put the stack between two 1/2" steel plates and then into the vise. The vise was tightened with a chunk of pipe for max leverage. The stack was put in at 11:00 last night so I have not looked at it yet since I want 24hrs of curing time.

My next one will be a jelly roll with the remaining material. I will post pictures soon!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!

I cut up an army helmet a while back thinking I could get some scales out of it. As you know, those hemets are just exactly what you want to make, kevlar phenolic (a material similar in structure to micarta).

The kevlar ate several spiral bits, cutting wheels, and saw blades before I finally resorted to a limb saw and did it by hand. When I put it on the grinder, it became a fur ball! The kevlar does not grind like other materials. It is designed to survive the harshest assaults and boy howdy..., it does.

If you have the loose kevlar fabric in hand, try wadding up a piece and holding against your grinder. You may get a taste of what lies ahead.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
