feathered damascus

I want to try to make a feathered damascus blade. I tried to use a maul head for the cutting tool but the cutting edge melted. I would like input on what others use for a cutting tool that are successful, type of steel, etc. I've started with a 1/4" cutting edge to draw the material. Do you think that is enough? Thanks.

I use a mild steel cutter although I do mine in a press. Try grinding up some charcoal. Wet the blade and coat the blade with the carbon dust. You have to work quick and not lollygag with the cutting, and it usually takes me more than one kick at the can. The 1/4" edge might be a bit rich, mine is a rounded 1/8".
