major score

each year at the Canadian Knifemakers Guild show in Toronto a gentleman comes up and we talk about this nice little Wolfe Loerchner knife that he has, Each year we discuss the little crack in the ivory and talk about trading a couple of my knives (or all of them) for his little Loerchner. Now you need to understand that Wolfes work was some of the first that absolutely fascinated me. I have never seen knives as clean and as well designed as his. He continues to do everything by hand. He comes to every Canadian Guild show and has a few on his table, a very nice guy. Anyways back to this years show. The gentleman shows up and after about 2 minutes of talking he pulls out his Loerchner, asks if I will trade him two of mine for the little WOlfe. I don't need to tell you how quickly I made that deal. We made the trade and he left the show. I guess he came in just to do this.
The little lady is 5 1/8" long, fixed blade with what looks like walrus ivory slabs. It is made from 1/16" stock with 1/16" thick bolsters. Getthis. He tapered the tang (ON A 1/16" THICK TANG) then he made the bolsters thicker on the butt end than on the blade end so that the bolsters are exactly square to the blade. He also file worked the spine right by the tip, again on a 1/16" thick spine and the design on the filework gets smaller as it closer to the tip to reflect the thickness of the blade. He kept it in proportion.
I will post a picture next time I set up my light box. I talked to Wolfe about it and he figured he made it in 1985. He also said that if I bring it back to next years show he will take it and fix the scale. 20 years later. I am so excited. Absolutely amazing.

Of course I showed my wife and she wondered why I just didn't make one!!!!!

Steve

Thumbs up

That is a great story Steve. I am glad you got such a nice piece for yourself. I know a whole bunch who would like to own one of his knives.

If you get the chance to show us the knife I guess it would be great.

Nice story Steve. One day someone will be telling stories like that about your knives!

Great story Steve. I don't know why you didn't make a knife like that, but I sure as heck know why I didn''t.......

I accused him of breaking it before he even got home but he swears that it was already broken....that's his story and he is sticking to it.

It is one pretty knife, simple and extremely clean lines.

I'm jealous.

That was a cool little knife to say the least.

Steve was pretty excited when he told me about the trade. I was just as excited for him, Wolfgang's knives are truly sites to behold. I got over to his table as quickly as I could to get a look at it.

Thanks for showing that little knife off Steve.

Sean
