Hi Andy,
I'm sorry that I'm so slow in responding to this but I haven't been spending as much time online as I used to. If you would really like to know what went on with Jim Bowie's sandbar fight, Jim Batson has a new book out that will answer most questions. He's the best expert that I know of on Bowie history and will reveal what actually went on there.
As to the reason that Bowie No.1 had an upswept hilt is and always will be debated. It is my personal opinion that the hilt was upswept as it was the technique of the day in a knife fight to do a sweeping motion aimed for the soft tissue or stomach. Having the hilt swept upwards kept your hand away from the cutting of the blade and left more cutting edge to contact the target. Just my $.02!
