Steve, got the glass today. Fast service!!!! One question, how close or far from the belt should the platen be? I have it set where it just touches the belt. Seems like I read somewhere you should have the platen pushing on the belt. Anyone know the best setup? On a KMG.

I was wondering the same thing. With mine pushed ALL THE WAY back, it still pushes on the belt considerably.. This is on a BaderIII grinder with Rob Frinks platen designed for the BaderIII.
Thanks. |

Use a 120 or 220 grit belt and slightly round off the top and bottom edge of the glass (not the sides) where it will rub against the back of the belt. Mount it how you want, I used JB Weld, one fourmite (wish I could remember who) tells how his glass came loose and basically exploded when the grinder was running. He now uses a small support ledge to hold the glass in addition to epoxy. Anyway, the belt should run snug enough against the glass to take the curl out of the belt. It will be a bit louder and if the air is dry expect some static eletricity. If it's really dry, expect a lot of static eletricity. I try to keep a finger on the machine some where to be grounded if it's bad.

tmickley,
Is there any reason that you say "not the sides" too? I thought you were supposed to round off the sides TOO, to allow working the sides of the belts also? Thanks for your help bud. I'm kind of new to this! |

Concerning ripples
Just wanted to paste a bit of an recent email exchange:
> Steve, > > I saw the post on the knife network about some of the guys having > ripples in the pyroceram. I also noted that when the piece arrived. > However I checked it out pretty good....the ripples were not on the > surface at all I checked it serveral ways and it is as flat as can > be the ripples if anything were on the inside....I have mine > attached to the platen and have been using it with no problems. I > even placed it on the granite surface plate I have and there were no > gaps caused by the ripples that I could see. Regardless I thought > the info might be useful to in some way. > > Take care Hi : boy am I glad to hear you say that. Because I went through my stock today, and came up with the same conclusion. There were visual ripples, but danged if I could detect them any other way. I have in the past though seen some with surface ripples, so can't say that some aren't. I also have to wonder, if some have ripples only on one side...why they don't put that on the inside.lol Thanks again. Steve |

Steve said: "I also have to wonder, if some have ripples only on one side...why
they don't put that on the inside.lol" Well, ok then, I'll do that. Don't send me another. If the problem area isn't also a weaker area, then I'll try it. I didn't like spending the extra $$ to send it back anyway. They |

No worries.
Already sent, Robert, so just keep the other for a spare.

I also noticed on the KMG platen, after glueing on the glass. You need to put a "BIG" bevel on the top and bottom of the steel platen to keep it from diggin into the wheels on the platen attachment. Since you are moving the platen back to adjust for the thickness of the glass.

Thanks for posting Steve.
Yeah, I originally thought that the ripples on mine were either inside, or just on ONE side. However, MINE has textured ripples on the surface of BOTH sides of the pyroceram. I can feel them with my finger. I can see where many may have the ripples only on ONE side's surface, or where they are INSIDE, and NOT on either surface. Thanks for sending another replacement. I appreciate your EXCELLENT customer service. You've got my business for good! |
